Oasis Churches

Oasis churches have four characteristics, which, when combined, we think makes us distinctive:

• a commitment to social justice

• full inclusion (particularly regarding those who identify as LGBT+)

• an open, progressive theology

• an informal, accessible church service style.

A commitment to social justice

We believe everyone should be able to reach their God-given potential, and we do whatever we can to create communities which enable that. That’s why, wherever we work, church is about so much more than just Sundays.

We're involved in everything from Foodbanks to debt advice, choirs to youth work, yoga to cookery, and much more, all of which is an outworking of our desire to live like Jesus in our local communities, to radically transform our societies, creating places where everyone is in, where everyone is valued, where everyone thrives, and enjoys life in all its fullness.

Full inclusion

All our churches are committed to being places where everyone is included and can make a contribution. That means our goal is always full inclusion, especially in relation to the LGBT+ community. Sadly, the church is often a place where those of us who define as LGBT+ are excluded, rejected and discriminated against, and we’re determined to be different.

The love of God compels us to welcome and celebrate anyone and everyone, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. We’re proud to have LGBT+ people on our leadership teams, in our music teams, leading our services, preaching, leading our kids and youth work, and at every other level of involvement. Our churches regularly conduct same-sex marriages.

An open, progressive theology

We believe that theology isn’t just a subject to study; it’s a conversation to explore. As a movement, rather than adopting immovable statements of faith and defending doctrinal positions, we commit ourselves to the continuous task of honouring and grappling with the Bible in community and with God.

Our churches value the love of God, the inclusion of all, the ongoing transformation of self, a non-literal application of the Bible, social justice, learning from other sources of wisdom and caring for the earth.

An informal church service style

We believe church should be a place where you can come as you are. So you don’t need to dress up or know anything before you come – we’ll explain what we’re doing during the service and how everyone can participate.

We don't assume any prior knowledge of Christianity - we want our services to always be somewhere where someone can walk inside a church for the very first time and understand what's going on. (And importantly, we always have coffee, and sometimes pastries too!)
